Season 2 Ep 7: How to Do Course Corrections

SHOW NOTES

In the podcast, we talk about Course Corrections and how to go about it.

Whoops!

The unexpected can shift you into discomfort, especially when it’s unplanned. You can stand there looking at the jumbled mess and start erasing until your eraser has been worn down to nothing.

When you’ve finished erasing, the moment of truth arrives. Now what? Start over?

Perhaps you start over or perhaps you start right where you are.

Stay Right Where You Are

In a moment of discomfort and unease, the instinct may be to turn and run but what if you stayed? When you are uncomfortable or lost, that’s not a time to make drastic changes. Often when you make a decision from a place of imbalance, imbalance resurfaces.

Starting Right Where You Are

That’s right staying right where you are and taking inventory can be your first step. Even if it’s uneasy and uncomfortable. Start with what you know and expand from there.

Stepping Small

When you are ready to take another step, take a small one. Gain your power, your poise and your confidence. If you need help with your power, poise, and presence here it is.

Stand Tall

Right the ship first and then when your back on solid ground, make your move. If you are ready to take that big leap, this would be the place to make it.

How do you handle course corrections?

Season 2 Ep 6: Mental Fitness

SHOW NOTES

In the podcast, we discover mental fitness and how you can increase yours.

Mental Fitness and Neuroplasticity

Your brain grows and changes over time. In fact over your entire life your brain continues to grow and develop as you have new experiences and learn. Learning isn’t just good for your development, it’s good mental fitness.

Your brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and create new neural pathways. New neural pathways develop over time, and that in essence is why it can be hard to break a habit. New neural pathways have to be molded, carved out and shifted for your old habits to disappear. In fact that is one of the main benefits of executive coaching. Executive coaches are in the profession of creating new neural forests for their clients.

Of all the things executive coaches do, this is the most magical.

Increasing Your Mental Fitness

There are literally millions of ways to increase your mental fitness.

  • learn a new hobby
  • learn a new language
  • try new things
  • read a book
  • imagine – use your imagination skills
  • learn a new skill
  • partner with an executive coach

Your options really are endless.

How are you going to increase your mental fitness?

Season 2 Ep 5: Avoiding Burnout

SHOW NOTES

In the podcast, we talk about Burnout and how to avoid it.

We talk about several ways you can avoid burnout on the podcast.

There are techniques for avoiding burnout everyone should have at the ready when you start to notice yourself drifting into burn-out territory.

While there are several types of burnout, the antidotes we will explore here are for the most common types of burnout – overstress. For most people who work in an office the most taxing organ we work with is our brain. Our brains are like cell phones when it comes to activity and energy usage.

Charging your Brain

If you’ve recharged your phone overnight, you know it’s fresh and ready to go first thing in the morning. So is your brain.

Draining your Brain

Throughout the day, if you do nothing, your phone loses charge. So does your brain. The more you use your phone the quicker it drains. The same holds true for your brain.

Multi-tasking Drains your Brain

Just as having 15 open tabs on your phone, watching a video, texting, and sifting through apps, drains your phone battery quicker than a single text so does multi-tasking drain your brain of precious resources.

Less Optimal Performance

When your phone’s battery life is low, there are fewer and fewer tasks it can do and there will come a point if it is not re-charged, it won’t work until it gets recharged. As your drain your brain and fail to refresh it, it will take you longer and longer to do tasks.

Warnings

When your phone is about to die, it will usually trigger a warning so you will know to recharge it. Your brain does the same thing but often we mis-interpret it and head for snacks, distraction by other pixels (another brain draining activity) or something else.

What to do

The remedy for this type of burnout is the same as for your phone, recharge it and quit overtaxing it.

  • Recharge throughout your day
  • Rest – build rest cycles into your workday

Lest you think this will lead to productivity losses. What if we were to tell you this can lead to wild productivity gains. The trick is to find the magic formula that will work for you. Elite althetes, the elite of the elite athletes we should say are calculated about rest more so than the regular elite athlete. If you want to discover your perfect equation for high performance, talk with one of our elite performance coaches for more high performance tips.

Season 2 Ep 4: 5 Ways to Honor Women

SHOW NOTES

In the podcast, we keep talking about how to honor women and we go into 5 ways you can do that. These methods work for men, women, children and anyone with a pulse. Master these techniques and you’ll be well on your way to honor people in your life.

We talk about 5 ways to strengthen your honor muscles on the podcast.

Advocate

Advocating for someone is to speak for their behalf and not on their behalf. The difference is you don’t speak for them. She has a voice and can use it and she may need someone to lift her visibility so her message can gain traction. Anyone can do this. You don’t have to be the CEO to advocate for someone. Colleagues, peers and friends can advocate when they point her out to others (beyond their colleagues, peers and friends).

Bad news travels fast. So does good news. Don’t be afraid to use your voice to recognize others for their good work. Add context to your words of thanks or praise and if you don’t know how to praise from your authentic center, don’t be afraid to work with someone to help you.

Believe

Believe in other’s capabilities and see them as they can’t or won’t see themselves. Believing in someone doesn’t mean you have to grab your pom-poms and head for your cheerleading voice. It may mean you have to challenge their way of thinking.

“Oh, I’d love that job but they are looking for someone who has a different skill than mine”

“Assumption”

That quick little assumption challenge may be the uncomfortable prod she needs to question her doubting beliefs.

Consult

Consult with her instead of directing her or telling her what to do. She’s strong even though she may not believe it. She’s resourceful even if she can’t believe it. She’s creative even if she’s unwilling to admit it. Help her find her answer.

“I don’t know what to do”

“What do you know?”

That one simple question can get her moving in a direction toward her answer and the best part is she’ll think you are a genius. When you consult, you lift her up and she lifts you up.

Direct

Wait. We just told you to consult and not direct. Now we are telling you to direct her and instead of telling her what to do, direct her to communities of support. If your company has employee resource groups for like-minded folks, then direct her there. If you think she would benefit from training or coaching, direct her to resources. By the way we know a number of top notch coaches inside and outside of our practice. We are happy to help her find a partner here.

When you are providing resources that means you should have a handy list of resources. If you don’t have one, use ours here.

Encourage

No alt text provided for this image

Encourage risk if she’s the type that will only move when 100% confident. Most people are uncomfortable with risk, and could benefit from people in their lives encouraging them to act even if they are only 95% confident.

Now if she’s super keen on risk, then discouraging risk could be in order. Use your best judgement on how and when to encourage risk. In any case this is a good tool to have in your resource kit.

Word of caution: If you are working with children, use your best judgement. If the kid is jumping off the roof, likely you need to discourage risk.

Those are our A-B-C-D-Es of how to honor those around you.

Season 2 Ep 3: Honoring Women

SHOW NOTES

In the podcast, we honor women by speaking to Dr. Kelly Paradis, a Medical Physicist and Chair of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Michigan Department of Radiation Oncology.

International Women’s Day allows us to honor women.
Organizations are losing money and innovation by not having women in equal levels of leadership. Yet, women leave the workplace, feeling pushed out as companies struggle to retain female talent. Power, Poise, and Presence equip leaders and, in a particular way, women with the powerful techniques for exerting their brand of power, poise, and presence to reverse course and bring profitability and innovation back to the workplace.

Power, Poise, and Presence give you the secrets to unlocking your internal lockbox full of answers to how you can show up for every moment you desire with your signature power, poise, and presence.

Companies are striving and struggling to have women rise into leadership. Companies are struggling to retain women, especially during the Great Resignation. Research shows women aren’t advancing in leadership at the same pace as men, and companies are striving to mandate women in leadership roles to balance and foster innovation at all levels of the organization. However, if women aren’t strengthened to embody the skills needed in those roles, they risk losing ground in the long run, as the research and data models suggest.

Courses

Women are reading books, taking courses in leadership, forming employee resource groups, and working extra hours to learn the skills to advance in leadership. Women feel overwhelmed, burnt out and take on more external learning opportunities to help them better tackle their overwhelm. However, the added external demands contribute to their overwhelm instead of taking it away. These leadership development courses and additional workshops fail to equip them with lifelong sustainable habits. By developing their internal resources with Power, Poise, and Presence, women can better learn to create lifelong habits to support their growth and development. This will help women create a Powerful, Poised, and Present Generation.

How Power, Poise and Presence can help you

Power, Poise, and Presence will equip you with your own brand of power, poise, and presence. I do not give. a one-size-fits-all approach. I help women find their own embodied leadership characteristics such as power, poise, and presence. You will learn

  • How to harness your own brand of power, poise and presence
  • Communication skills for executive level leadership
  • to embody power, poise and presence
  • How to create a culture of power, poise and confidence

Season 2 Ep 2: Habit Building Formula

SHOW NOTES

In the podcast, we reveal a habit-building formula that will serve you for life.

So you think it takes 6-8 weeks to establish habits.

Yep. Lies. You can establish a habit in one day.

It’s a bit finding the magic recipe, experimenting, and celebrating.

If you want to learn the magic habit formula tune into the podcast or read the LinkedIn article on it.

If you are like most people you may have made a New Year’s Resolution, and if you are like most people you may have given up that New Year’s Resolution or not even set one. By the end of the year a whopping 9% of people who set resolutions will feel like they are successful in keeping them. That’s pretty dismal as far as success statistics go. It may be no wonder why some people fail to even try resolving to start a new habit or change an established one.

For those establishing a new habit, it can be frustrating. I know in my gym, we can’t even get in a class or get near a weight machine with all the new members that have joined working themselves up to a feverish pitch of exhaustion at the beginning of January. By the time March rolls along, we are able to make our way back onto my favorite exercise routines because the gym tends to clear out of haphazard habiteers, who sadly have burned out, gotten hurt or whose motivation has failed them.

As a coach, I’m in the profession of equipping my leaders with effective and sustainable habits that last a lifetime. I’m also in the profession of teaching my clients how to effect change in sustainable ways, many of those ways are unique to each and every person, client, and organization. However I will share the successful habit building formula that got me to keep a clean desk (every day), weigh myself (every day), exercise (again, every day) and lose 30 pounds and keep it off. It’s the same formula I share with my clients, and teach my clients to work with their direct reports and those in their own helping conversations be it as a mentor, advocate or sponsor.

Season 2 Ep 1: The time for women leaders is now

SHOW NOTES

In the podcast we reveal some data, insights and share why I think the time for women in leadership is now.

Did you catch last month’s Better.com fiasco? It’s on the podcast.

Enough said.

Organizations are hemorrhaging. The Great Resignation from 2021 is continuing in 2022.

In the podcast I talk about some of the research I uncovered while preparing my Power, Poise and Presence Manuscript. The data was super intriguing about women in the workplace.

Labor statistics are dreadful. In case you haven’t noticed, see the following data:

  • 41% of workers around the world are planning on leaving their jobs (Data Source
  • 55% of American workers plan to seek new jobs in the next 12 months  and
  • that number goes higher for GenZ and Millenials (70%) (Data Source)
  • According to Gallup, the global workforce is disengaged.
  • Only 20% are engaged, and
  • in the US the number of engaged workers rises to >30%

Lest you think the pandemic started this all, data from the US Labor Department clearly shows the pandemic is not to blame. What we see happening was already in motion prior to the pandemic. Follow us on LinkedIn for more articles like this.
